Year 5

Class Teacher – Miss Kernick

Hello, my name is Miss Kernick and I love the challenging but highly rewarding nature of teaching.

In my spare time, I enjoy tap dancing, and will soon become a fully qualified dance teacher. I love to play and watch all kinds of sports, like badminton, tennis and football. When I am at home, I like to bake and take my dog Jasper out for long walks in the countryside.

To contact Miss Kernick please email: ckernick.teacher@thornhill.durham.sch.uk

Welcome to our Year 5 webpage.
We hope that you find the information here useful! If you require any more information, please contact us and we will do our best to help. The following notes outline some important routines that should help us all to have an organised and happy year.
Spellings / Maths Facts
Children will be given their spellings and maths facts in their planner on a Tuesday and will be tested on the following Monday. The scores will be recorded in the planners and please could you initial to confirm that you have seen them. Your help and support with spellings is greatly appreciated.
Home Reading
Children need to regularly read at home – 20 minutes per day either to an adult or independently. Reading is recorded in the children’s planner. Please can you sign their planner to confirm reading has been completed and feel free to write in the comments box as required. They have reading books from school, but may also read newspapers, magazines and anything of interest in addition to these. This will hopefully develop their love of reading and improve their literacy and spelling skills. The planners are checked weekly and targets to further develop specific reading skills are set during your child’s guided comprehension sessions.
PE
Children will need an indoor PE kit (red shorts, white t-shirt and plimsolls) and an outdoor kit (tracksuit bottoms and top and outdoor trainers) labelled with their name. Kits can be left at school over the half term.
Medication
Any medication must be handed into the office and will be administered by Mrs. Overfield. Those children prescribed with inhalers will keep these in a class box within the Year 5 classroom in order to ensure ease of access.
Letters
There are many opportunities for school visits during Year 5, therefore there will be numerous letters for your children to bring home from school. Please encourage your children to bring letters back as soon as possible as consent is required. If a child does not bring back their consent form, this may mean they are unable to participate in the visit. An annual consent form has already been signed for the year, and this covers many local visits.
Jewellery / Make-up / Footwear
Please remember that children are not allowed to wear jewellery or make-up in school, and shoes should be black in colour and smart in style.
Thank you for your anticipated support this year. I am really looking forward to working with your children.
